Explore the Timeless Charm of Kendalia
The Texas Hill Country is dotted with towns full of history, charm, and hospitality. Kendalia is one such place where time has seemingly stood still. Much like Comfort, Texas, Kendalia offers visitors a chance to explore the rich history and vibrant culture of the region. Guests staying at Hotel Giles can plan a day trip to Kendalia to enjoy a delightful journey through time, learning about its storied past while experiencing the warm hospitality and unique attractions that this quaint town has to offer today.
Kendalia's history is deeply rooted in the ranching economy. It was home to numerous cattle, sheep, and goat ranches. The town is named after George Wilkins Kendall, a journalist, war correspondent, and pioneer Texas sheepman. Kendall, who also lent his name to Kendall County, settled in the area in the late 1840s to early 1850s. Kendalia became a formal settlement in 1847, with its first settlers putting down roots along Curry's Creek. By around 1900, the town was thriving, boasting three grocery stores, a cotton gin, two churches, a saloon, a blacksmith, a pharmacy, and a barber shop. Today, Kendalia remains a small farming community with a population of around 100 people, holding firmly to its roots. Visitors can still experience pieces of its history by visiting notable sites like the dance hall and the general store, as well as newer additions such as a monastery with its own winery.
One of the town's historic gems is Kendalia Halle, one of the oldest dance halls in Texas, erected in 1903. Kendalia Halle is a fine example of the German architectural style of the turn of the century. The hall hosts dances and live music on Saturday evenings once a month, offering guests the chance to enjoy some two-stepping, along with a beer and a BBQ taco. It's advisable to check the website's dances page for upcoming events and bands.
The Kendalia General Store is another historic landmark that has withstood the test of time. It’s rumored to serve the best hamburgers in Texas. This establishment is more than just a store and café; it also functions as the post office, a small engine repair shop, and a convenience store. The General Store embodies the multi-functional essence of small-town life.
For a touch of spiritual and historical significance, visitors can stop by the Kendalia Community Church. This church traces its origins back to 1886 when it was built as a Methodist church. Today, it is a non-denominational congregation holding services in the nearly untouched 138-year-old meetinghouse. This place of worship offers a serene glimpse into the town's enduring faith and community spirit.
To truly feel part of the Kendalia community, don't miss the Kendalia Volunteer Fire Department's annual Mexican enchilada dinner, an event held in early November that has been running for over 40 years. This dinner is a beloved tradition that brings the community together in celebration and support.
A newer addition to the town is the Holy Archangels Monastery, founded in 1996. This Greek Orthodox monastery is situated on a 140-acre property and welcomes visitors who respect its holy nature and modest dress code. The monastery’s Katholikon, modeled after the main church of St. Katherine on Mt. Sinai, is open for services. The monastery also boasts its own winery, continuing the Orthodox tradition of viticulture and winemaking. Using grapes from Napa and Sonoma, the monks produce Chardonnay, Merlot, and Syrah wines, which are sold to the public since the monastery became a bonded winery in 2011.
The tiny farming community of Kendalia, with its roots firmly planted in the past, invites you to slow down, savor the moment, and create lasting memories. Take a break from the hustle and bustle, and let Kendalia’s timeless charm and welcoming spirit captivate you. It’s an excursion that not only enriches your stay at Hotel Giles but also deepens your appreciation for the rich tapestry of the Texas Hill Country.
